One of the most scenic hikes on the "Valley Isle" is the Waihee Ridge Trail. Located on the North-West side of the island, this hike offers breathtaking views of the of the North Shore and looks into the valley of the West Maui Mountain from either side of the ridgeline including a glimpse of Makamakaole Falls. You will need to work for your views, however, with a 1,745ft elevation gain in just a 5 mile (total) out-and-back distance this hike is a bun burner but well worth it.
The trailhead has plenty of parking along with port-a-potties. Starting off with a steady but steep walk up a cememnt road is a great way to get your body warmed up for this hike. The trail is well groomed with switchbacks and stairs on the steeper parts of this lush hike making it ideal for hikers of all levels and safe. Be mindful of the weather as this area receives a lot of rainfall annually and can become a very messy muddy hike as rain showers can appear out of nowhere. Cloud cover can prevent the spectacular views down below so its best to go on a clear day or early in the morning to ensure you get to fully appreciate this hike for more than just a cardio workout.
At the top of the hike there is a picnic table to sit down, enjoy the views, and have a well deserved snack. As you begin to make your way back down to your car you will see the hike from a whole new perspective and fall in love with it all over again as you take in the ocean views from the opposite direction.
