This may come as a shock to you, but not everyone enjoys sun bathing on the beach. What!? You are one of those people? Well, lucky for you, Maui is so much more than just a day of lying on the beach. In past blog posts and in future ones we will highlight the numerous fun activities on the 'Valley Isle' such as hiking, water sports, scenic drives, whale watching, and many more. However, we would be doing quite a disservice if we did not at least mention some of the wonderful beaches Maui has to offer.
Located on Maui's West Side just north of Kapalua Bay in the scenic resort area of Kapalua, Fleming Beach, or DT Fleming Beach Park as you will find it on most maps, is the perfect blend of a beautiful, stereotypically scenic, Maui beach and diverse adventurous activities. Fleming Beach is the northernmost beach on Maui that sees regular amounts of visitors. Due to its location, the beach is a popular place for body boarders and surfers during larger swells that hit the West Coast. On calmer, clear days, many beach goers will be seen carrying a snorkel set and fins into the water for a glimpse of the coral and fish which tend to congregate on the beach's right or left sides.
Fleming Beach is the primary beach for those staying at the Ritz Carlton, however, it typically sees less visitors and more locals than similar beaches in Ka'anapali. There is usually plenty of parking at the park, bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, and open air grills for those looking to BBQ. This Beach is also the starting point for the Xterra Triathlon World Championships that have been held in the Kapalua area the last several years. Due to the unpredictability of the waves in the fall, the ocean has made for some 'challenging' swims to say the least.
