Nestled on the lower slopes of Haleakala just past Kula is the beautiful property of Ulupalakua Ranch where you will find Maui Wine. About a 30 min drive from Kahului, the quaint town of Kula welcomes you with cooler temperatures, rolling hills, and beautiful west facing views as you enjoy the drive to the winery.
Entering the property you are greeted by a charming tasting room with friendly staff who will guide you through your tasting. There are several wines to choose from and each visitor receives a complimentary tasting of up to 3 different varietals.
Below are the wines Bryan and I tasted during our visit:
LOKELANI - is Maui Wine's elegant sparkling rose. A faint pink color, it opens with fresh berries, energetic citrus and vanilla flower with a light crisp body. It makes a great gift for any special occasion. **Maui wine uses the traditional methode champenoise for creating their sparkling wines, the same process used in Champagne, France. This creates smaller bubbles which allows for more flavor, has a nice light mouth feel, and produces a higher quality wine.
MAUI BLANC - is not your typical wine as it is made 100% from Maui Gold pineapples but it does not disappoint. It is surprisingly not as sweet as one would expect. This semi-dry wine has very ripe pineapple on the nose and great smooth flavors on the palette.
SYRAH - from their Estate Grown selection, this Syrah starts with ripe berries, a nice amount of pepper, and has a mineral/earthy aspect that comes out after the initial fruit forward flavors fade away. Perfect to sip while relaxing in the cooler Maui evenings.
LEHUA - is their rich raspberry dessert wine that is dangerously good. With a full decadent mouth feel this wine is screaming to be poured over a bowl of vanilla ice cream or simply enjoyed by sipping on a glass while watching the sunset.
Another wine to mention that we have heard lots about is their HULA O'MAUI. They were out of stock during our tasting but look forward to trying this wine during our next Maui Wine visit.
Our experience at Maui Wine was more than we imagined. The area is rich in history and you can learn about the flora and fauna on the property and where they originated from, through a experienced guide on a free tour at the winery. The friendly knowledgeable staff, beautiful property, and outstanding wines made for a great afternoon. I recommended taking the time during your vacation here to enjoy this special piece of Maui.
